The city has grown exponentially, both in size and reputation, but it has managed to retain the quirky, creative spirit that makes it uniquely Austin. Whether you’re a visitor passing through or a local rediscovering your hometown, there’s always something to explore. 1. Town Lake “Lady Bird Lake” (Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail)
Lady Bird Lake, originally known as Town Lake, is a picturesque section of the Colorado River running through the heart of Austin. The 10-mile loop trail encircling this reservoir is officially named the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, but many locals simply call it the Town Lake Trail. Whether referred to as Lady Bird Lake, Town Lake, or even LBJ, all these names point to the same beloved area. Ideal for biking or a leisurely stroll, the trail offers both a complete tour and shorter segments for customizable adventures. Dotted with popular stops, it provides a perfect mix of scenic views and vibrant city life, making it a welcoming spot for everyone looking to enjoy a peaceful escape or an active day out.

Address:
Townlake doesn’t have a specific street address as it spans downtown Austin. You can start exploring anywhere along the 10-mile loop. A common starting point is Auditorium Shores at Town Lake Metropolitan Park, 800 W Riverside Dr, Austin, TX 78704. This address brings you to a popular section of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail along the southern shore.
Hours:
5:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily

Free, but activities can vary
IMPORTANT NOTES, TIPS, & SUGGESTIONS:
ON THE WATER: You can rent equipment from several locations based on your preferences: Texas Rowing Center, Zilker Park Boat Rentals, and BOTE Austin are ideal for joining the lively scene, while Lady Bird Lake Rentals and Austin Rowing Club near Rainey Street offers convenient access. For a more secluded experience, head towards East Austin to Live Love Paddle or Epic Sup, where you can paddle out to lesser-known spots like Snake Island. Be sure to check the operating hours, as not all rental places are open daily.
CYCLING: In theory, using ATX MetroBike B-cycle Kiosk Stations for bike rentals seems like a great option due to their convenient locations around the city. However, do NOT use them due to their complex pricing structure, which can lead to unexpectedly high costs. My best friend learned this the hard way after paying over $100 for what was expected to be a minor rental. Instead, opt for more reliable and transparent services such as Austin Bike Tour & Rentals or Barton Springs Bike Rental to ensure a more transparent and enjoyable experience. Be sure to check the operating hours, as not all rental places are open daily.
While I have personally swum in Lady Bird Lake, I wouldn’t advise it due to concerns about water quality. For those interested in swimming, Barton Springs is a safer, designated area with cleaner water. If you’re wanting to swim, check out my other blogpost 12 Pool Day Passes in Austin That Are Totally Worth It or Outdoor things to do in Austin. Additionally, if you’re bringing a pet, ensure they do not drink from the lake. The presence of blue-green algae can be harmful, as I learned firsthand when my dog had a severe reaction after ingesting the water. It’s crucial to prioritize safety to fully enjoy the lake’s natural beauty and recreational offerings.
It’s also worth noting that the lake’s current name, Lady Bird Lake, wasn’t chosen with approval from its namesake. Lady Bird Johnson was opposed to having the lake renamed after her, preferring to keep its original name, Town Lake. Despite her wishes, the city of Austin changed the name after her death. It’s confusing. To many, including myself, it will always be Town Lake.
For those planning to visit Townlake, while it’s a fantastic destination for daytime activities, I advise against walking around at night. Though it’s not meant to alarm, it’s important to be aware of safety concerns, including local rumors about a “Rainey Street Killer,” a purported serial killer in the area… For your safety, enjoy the lake’s many offerings during daylight hours and consider other areas of Austin for your nighttime adventures.
2. Barton Springs Pool
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Austin, Barton Springs Pool stands as the city’s quintessential urban oasis. Fed by natural underground springs, this three-acre pool maintains a crystal-clear appearance and a constant temperature of 68-70°F, making it an ideal spot for swimming any time of the year. Surrounded by lush parkland, it serves as a peaceful retreat where both locals and visitors can lounge, swim, or simply enjoy the sun’s embrace. Adding to its allure, the pool hosts enchanting Full Moon gatherings, where attendees come together to swim under the night sky and howl at the moon. This beloved tradition encapsulates the communal spirit and enchanting ambiance of Barton Springs, making it a unique blend of recreational and restorative experiences, emblematic of Austin’s laid-back yet vibrant culture. Whether you’re seeking a refreshing dip on a hot Texas day or a magical evening to reconnect with nature, Barton Springs Pool delivers an unforgettable experience.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
In the summer, parking at Barton Springs can be quite a challenge (which also can cost money) due to its popularity. As for getting into the springs, the city recommends paying through a dedicated app, though not everyone may want to download another app and create an account just for this. For those who prefer a different method, there are ticket kiosks on-site where you can pay using a debit or credit card. However, be prepared for potentially long, chaotic, and disorganized lines at these kiosks, and they might sometimes be out of order. If you want to avoid these hassles, I highly recommend bringing cash, preferably the exact change, to streamline the experience.
3. Bats at Congress Avenue Bridge
For years, I dismissed the Congress Avenue Bridge bat show as just another tourist attraction, never venturing to see it during my first 8 years in Austin. That all changed one evening as I was running along the trails of Town Lake and found myself amidst the crowd gathered to watch this spectacle. Every evening from March to October, hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from beneath the bridge, filling the sky with the silhouettes of a mesmerizing display against the city skyline. Since that serendipitous evening, I’ve been an enthusiastic advocate, encouraging all who visit Austin during these months to witness this unique, awe-inspiring event. It’s not just a tourist attraction; it’s a captivating natural phenomenon that truly embodies the spirited essence of Austin.

The bats at the South Congress Bridge typically emerge around sunset, but for the best experience, it’s advised to arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset. During hot weather, the bats may emerge a bit earlier than usual. The viewing experience can vary, so arriving early ensures you get a good spot to see this natural spectacle. Additionally, consider extra time for parking, as it can be quite challenging, especially for those not familiar with the area. Early arrival not only secures a good viewing spot but also alleviates the stress of finding parking in a busy part of Austin.
4. Texas State Capitol
The Texas State Capitol, towering over downtown Austin, truly lives up to the saying ‘Everything is Bigger in Texas,’ as it’s even taller than the U.S. Capitol. Established in a city whose skyline began to transform in 1964 when the rules preventing buildings from being taller than the Capitol were changed, the Capitol and the University of Texas Tower create a notable silhouette against the sky. This stunning architectural feat invites visitors to explore its expansive, beautifully landscaped grounds and partake in free guided tours that delve deep into the state’s rich history. A visit to the grand rotunda is essential for appreciating the building’s majestic interior. More than just a destination for history enthusiasts, the Capitol serves as a proud beacon of Texas’ aesthetic grandeur and political significance. It represents Austin’s dynamic evolution while preserving its historical roots, rooted in a past where Texas was governed by six different entities, including its time as an independent nation. Visitors are not only drawn to witness live legislative sessions but also to engage with the complex history that shaped Texas.

The search for a new location marked the beginning of a long development process, culminating in the planned reopening of the gallery in East Austin at the Canopy in 2025. This relocation aims to continue the gallery’s legacy in a more controlled and supportive environment.
