Florence’s One Table: A Seat for Everyone

When my husband and I moved to Florence, Alabama two years ago, we had never even been here before. We packed our bags in Austin, Texas and took a leap of faith—no plan, no preview, just a feeling that we were meant to come.

Alabama had never been on my radar, but something about Florence instantly felt right. Two years later, we’re still so happy with that decision. We bought a beautiful, affordable home—something we could never dream of in Austin—and found ourselves surrounded by nature, music, and genuine community.

Lately, Florence has been buzzing. The roads between here and Huntsville are expanding, new businesses are opening, and it seems like every weekend there’s a new event downtown. But this week, we experienced something that perfectly captures what makes this town so special: 1 Table.

Started in 2017, 1 Table is a community Thanksgiving celebration with no agenda, no tickets, and no barriers. It’s completely free and open to all. There’s no religion, no politics—just people coming together to share a meal and gratitude.

When Adam and I arrived, a long line wrapped through downtown, but it moved surprisingly fast. Volunteers handed out trays piled high with turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, and pie—comfort food at its best. We sat shoulder to shoulder with neighbors and strangers alike, everyone smiling, chatting, and savoring the warmth of the moment.

It’s rare to find something so simple yet so powerful. No performances, no speeches, no marketing—just a table long enough for everyone.

As we walked home, full and happy, I realized how perfectly One Table represents what we’ve found in Florence: connection without pretense, generosity without expectation, and community that feels real.

Next year, we’re hoping to volunteer and give back in any way we can. Because when a town sets one long table for everyone—no matter who you are—you know you’ve found something worth staying for.
