Inside the World’s Largest Gin Library: A Must-Visit in the Azores
Tucked into the lush hills of São Miguel, the Gin Library at Solar Branco Eco Estate is more than just a bar—it’s a celebration of craftsmanship, sustainability, and quiet luxury. With over 1,400 gins from around the world, it holds the title of the world’s largest gin collection. But even more than the size, it’s the atmosphere that makes it unforgettable.
I don’t drink often—I go through long stretches of not touching alcohol. But every now and then, I’ll indulge. And when I do, I want it to be meaningful. This was one of those moments in the gin library.
A Global Journey in a Glass
The Gin Library isn’t just impressive—it’s deeply intentional. Each bottle has a story. From obscure small-batch distilleries in remote corners of the world to rare vintage labels, the collection is curated with love and curiosity.
They even make their own in-house gin, and honestly? It’s phenomenal—bright, balanced, and full of character. The best part? €1 from every bottle of the house gin and 50 cents from every drink sold is donated to the Ocean Azores Foundation, supporting marine conservation right here in the islands.
If you’re interested in visiting the gin library, you’ll need to make a reservation HERE. The €15 booking fee includes your first drink, and you’re welcome to order more once you’re there. I highly recommend staying for at least two rounds—the bartenders will tailor the experience based on your flavor profile, and the discovery is half the fun.
If you’re a collector or traveling with a bottle in tow, there’s even an option to swap a bottle into their legendary collection. Just be sure it meets the criteria:
- It must be a local or craft gin
- It has to be something they don’t already have
- It must be unopened
- Bottle size should be 50cl to 70cl or more
Want to Go Deeper? Try the Azorean Gin Masterclass
If you want a more immersive tasting experience, consider booking the Azorean Gin Masterclass. You’ll try three gin and tonics, each paired with thoughtfully selected tonics and garnishes. Light snacks are served alongside, and the whole tasting is guided by passionate staff who really know their stuff. Naturally, the gin library offers the perfect setting for learning.
Oh—and don’t be surprised if a few cats come say hi during your visit. They roam the property freely and only add to the charm. The entire staff, from bartenders to hosts, are knowledgeable, kind, and genuinely enthusiastic about creating a special experience for every guest.

The Secret Sushi Den: Senhor Raposa’s
And just when you think the night can’t get any better… it does. Hidden behind the Gin Library is Senhor Raposa’s Secret Drinking Den—a reservation-only sushi speakeasy unlike anything else in the Azores.
The entrance is clever and playful, the ambiance cozy and elevated, and the food? Absolutely next level. The €65 tasting menu is worth every euro. It’s intimate, exclusive, and feels like discovering a secret world within a secret world.
