Upon disembarking at the ferry port in Velas, we quickly realized our oversight. The quest for a taxi turned into an unexpected hour-long ordeal, as we dialed down the list of local taxi services, each call echoing the sparse, laid-back nature of the island. Just as we were teetering on the edge of frustration, a willing driver finally emerged, rescuing us from our standstill and underscoring the less populated, rustic charm of São Jorge Azores.

Our lodge, Make It Happen Farm, was a sanctuary set against the pastoral backdrop of Sao Jorge Azores. The host welcomed us with a tour of the farm, revealing a property that blended rustic allure with modern comforts. Its crown jewel was a beautifully appointed kitchen, framed by a breathtaking view of Mt. Pico—an iconic sight that promised to be the backdrop of our stay. The first day’s rain confined us indoors, but it turned out to be a blessing. We found joy in the simple pleasures of cooking together and dancing to the rhythm of a Portuguese drama flickering on the TV, letting the day dissolve into the cozy, rain-soothed ambiance of the farm.
A Bike Ride Like No Other
Cleared skies the next morning unveiled the majestic Mt. Pico in full glory. Inspired, we borrowed bikes from our host and set off along the coastal trail that hugged the contours of the island. The path was a picturesque route that eventually gave way to the rugged terrain of São Jorge Azores’ lesser-traveled roads. The hills were formidable, challenging us with inclines steeper than those of San Francisco, each pedal stroke drawing us deeper into the island’s wild embrace.
Realizing our ambition might have outpaced our preparation, we turned back, the descent offering a swift and exhilarating return. With a newfound respect for the island’s topography, we secured the last available rental car, determined to explore more comprehensively. What followed was an awe-inspiring revelation of São Jorge Azores’ landscapes, each turn on the island roads unveiling vistas so stunning they seemed celestial, prompting us to question if we had stumbled into paradise itself.

The following day, armed with our rental car, we embarked on a comprehensive tour around São Jorge Azores. We drove nearly every street, each new vista surpassing the last in its breathtaking beauty. Curiously, it was the one island where I didn’t feel compelled to take many photos; I was simply too mesmerized and awestruck by the beauty around me. This island didn’t just impress us; it changed the way we connected with nature and with each other. Every memory etched into our hearts a call to return, to once again lose ourselves in the peaceful embrace of São Jorge Azores.
