Sometimes, I wonder how I managed to travel so much, work so hard, and still have the boundless energy to do it all. At 23, it seems like you have an infinite supply of vitality, ready to fuel any spontaneous adventure. One such escapade took place over three memorable days in November of 2015 when my friends and I set out on a whirlwind trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The journey, the experiences, and the memories we made still resonate with me, a testament to the magic of Eureka Springs as the magical vacation destination.

The Midnight Departure

Our adventure began late one night after my friends finished work at 11 PM. With no time to waste, the four of us hopped into a car and embarked on a ten-hour drive from Austin, Texas, to Eureka Springs. Fueled by youthful enthusiasm and a shared sense of adventure, we drove through the night, the excitement of the unknown ahead keeping us awake and alert. As we approached our destination, the first rays of sunlight began to illuminate the scenic beauty of Eureka Springs, welcoming us to a new world of exploration.

Morning in Eureka Springs

Arriving at dawn, we were greeted by the tranquil charm of Eureka Springs. Before checking into our Airbnb, we found a quaint café for breakfast, savoring the quiet morning and much needed caffiene while planning our day. Energized, we took a leisurely stroll through the picturesque streets, marveling at the town’s unique blend of Victorian architecture and natural beauty.

One of our first stops was the breathtaking Thorncrown Chapel. Nestled in the woods, this architectural marvel with its towering glass walls provided a moment of serenity and reflection. Nearby, the Christ of the Ozarks statue stood majestically, offering stunning views and a sense of peace that set the tone for our trip.

A Forest Retreat

By mid-morning, we checked into our Airbnb, a cozy haven tucked away in the Ozark forest. Exhausted from our overnight drive, we took a much-needed nap, followed by a rejuvenating soak in the outdoor jacuzzi. Surrounded by the sounds of nature—the rustling leaves and the chorus of bullfrogs—we felt a deep sense of relaxation and connection to the natural world.

Evening Excitement

As evening fell, we decided to explore downtown Eureka Springs. The walk from our Airbnb was enchanting, with the sounds of bullfrogs and the cool night air creating a magical atmosphere. Downtown was alive with vibrant energy, and we quickly found ourselves bar-hopping, enjoying the lively nightlife and the warm hospitality of the locals.

Our night took an unexpected turn when we decided to call for a taxi to take us back to our Airbnb. To our surprise, a friendly hippie driving a hearse arrived, harmonica in hand. With a few drinks in us, we couldn’t help but laugh and enjoy the quirky ride back, making it one of the most memorable parts of our trip.

Into the Wilderness

The next morning, we woke up to a delicious breakfast prepared by our Airbnb hosts. Fueled and ready for more adventure, we drove into the Ozark National Forest to begin our overnight primitive camping trek. Near Ponca, AR, we found a perfect spot, set up camp, and embarked on a three-mile descent through the rugged terrain. Crossing a frigid river, we set up our tent for the night.

That evening, gathered around the campfire, we shared stories and laughter, the starlit sky above us. We learned a valuable lesson about packing enough food, as we ended up with only two protein bars for breakfast, which we split among the four of us. The hike back was challenging, especially with the ascent, but the camaraderie and the beautiful scenery made it an unforgettable experience.

The Journey Home

Exhausted but exhilarated, we began our drive back to Austin. One of our friends had to work the next day, and he slept the entire ten-hour journey home, waking just in time to get ready for his shift. The trip was a whirlwind, a blend of spontaneity, adventure, and youthful energy that we all cherish.
